AX/E 25 Review: Axopar’s New Electric Sport Boat Pushing Performance Boundaries

Electric Boating and Performance Redefined

The new Axopar AX/E 25 electric boat is revolutionizing the boating industry by combining Axopar’s renowned hull design with cutting-edge electric propulsion. This latest release from Axopar is more than just a tweak to the traditional lineup; it’s a bold step into the future of silent, high-performance boating. Rowan McMahon, Manager at Eyachts, took this innovative vessel out for a test run, highlighting its exceptional performance and standout features.

Performance: Silent Power with a Punch

The first thing that strikes you about the AX/E 25 is the complete absence of engine noise because this Axopar is powered by the new Evoy Storm 300 horsepower electric motor. This shift to electric power transforms the boating experience, offering the kind of quiet cruising that combustion engines simply can’t match.

Despite the quiet operation, the AX/E 25 doesn’t sacrifice power. “This boat, with the Evoy 300hp, can take you up to 50 knots,” says McMahon, a speed that exceeds that of the traditional Axopar 25 outboards. And while the motor has the potential to peak at 600 horsepower, McMahon makes it clear that “600 is definitely not necessary on a boat of this size”—a testament to the efficiency of the AX/E 25’s hull design.

Instant Torque and Impressive Range

McMahon highlights the immediate torque provided by the electric motor. “The moment you push the throttles forward, you feel the torque,” he explains, comparing the sensation to driving an electric car. This instant power, combined with Axopar’s highly efficient performance hull, means that the boat “cuts through the water very nicely, even with a bit of chop around.” The electric motor offers a new level of responsiveness that sets the AX/E 25 apart from its combustion-engine predecessors.

For those concerned about range, the AX/E 25 delivers solid performance here as well. “At idle speed, we’re moving at 4.7 knots and using 7.7 kW of power, giving it a range of 70 nautical miles, while at cruising at 25knots you get 1 hour of run time,” McMahon explains, underscoring the practicality of this boat for day-to-day use in local waterways. Whether navigating Sydney Harbour, Western Australia, or the Gold Coast, the AX/E 25 provides ample range for a day out on the water.

Key Features: A Visual Standout

While the performance is groundbreaking, the visual and functional features of the AX/E 25 also make it a standout in the Axopar lineup. One of the most striking aspects of the boat is its unique design. “This is still an Axopar 25 hull, but the colour and fit-out take it to another level,” McMahon says. The AX/E 25 sports a distinct off-white cream colour, setting it apart from other models in the Axopar range. This subtle but significant difference in aesthetics underscores Axopar’s intent to position the AX/E sub-brand as a premium offering in the electric boating sector.

Attention to detail is evident throughout the boat, particularly in the finishes. “You’ll notice the timber dash panelling and the new upholstery,” McMahon points out. These touches elevate the boat’s interior and contribute to its modern, luxurious feel. Even small details, such as the painted speaker covers and matching T-top beams, reflect the level of craftsmanship that has gone into the AX/E 25’s design.

Smart Design and Versatility

Functionality hasn’t been compromised for style, either. The AX/E 25 is packed with practical features that make it ideal for weekend cruising. “Under the helm seat, we’ve got a sink, and under the co-pilot seat, a refrigerator that can double as an esky,” McMahon notes. The boat’s clever use of space extends to its multi-storage central seating, where the lithium batteries and technical components are housed. “You’ve still got traditional AGM batteries for running the DC electronics, but the brains of the operation are down here,” McMahon adds, referencing the 126 kWh of lithium battery capacity.

The layout of the boat is designed for comfort and versatility. The rear seating area can be easily transformed into a lounging space, providing ample room for relaxation. “This will be comfortable for three to four people,” McMahon says, highlighting the boat’s ability to accommodate both social outings and solitary cruises.

Another unique feature is the sleek windshield, which can be adjusted depending on the conditions. “When it’s windier, you can lift it up for more protection,” McMahon explains. The attention to both form and function is evident in every aspect of the AX/E 25, from the safety handles stitched into the canvas to the electric windlass and stainless anchor on the bow.

Down below, the accommodation space is spacious for a 25-foot boat, featuring a large bed and an electric toilet. “It’s perfect for weekend cruising,” McMahon comments, noting that the bright, homely feel of the interior makes it an inviting space for longer trips.

Axopar also offers the AX/E 22, a more compact yet equally impressive option within the electric range. With a top speed of 36 knots powered by a 120hp electric motor, the AX/E 22 combines agility with efficiency. This model can be customized with U-shaped seating and a table at the aft, along with an additional table at the bow, creating versatile dining and social areas—perfect for entertaining or enjoying time on the water with family and friends.

Is Electric Boating the Future?

As McMahon sums up, “The AX/E 25 handles and drives completely differently from a traditional Axopar 25.” This electric version offers an exhilarating, quiet, and eco-friendly boating experience that will appeal to those looking for both performance and sustainability. Using Axopars efficient hull design the new Ax/e range is able to deliver compelling ranges making electric boats a real and viable solution for those wanting to be more eco-friendly.
